The Art of Creativity
Every child is an artist. The problem is staying an artist when you grow up. - Pablo Picasso
I want to take you through my journey from a childhood artist to a creative adult.
At age five I was an inventor. A felt pen, a piece of paper, some scribbles and Tada! I had created a time machine. This was the beginning of my self-expression. My imagination had no limits and my creativity ran wild. Fast forward a few years to where I started to be completely committed to my efforts. Using my creative mind to master the art of getting out of homework. Really expensive, privately tutored homework. Sorry mom and dad! My creative outlet continued on this mischievous streak for years. As my curiosity grew so did my ideas! Pulling pranks and stunts became a regular habit- and a constant dread for my family.
Creativity is truly all around us! Leo Burnette said “Curiosity about life in all of its aspects, I think is still the secret of great creative people." Taking an active interest in our surroundings and always wanting to know more.
As I got older and perhaps a little wiser I realized I may be able to put my creative energy into something more tangible... Something more material. Fabric material to be exact! I applied to fashion school after my senior year of high school. Never having sewed a day in my life! During my time at school, I productively mastered my tangible creativity. I fell in love! If style is a way we show the world who we are without speaking. I finally found a way to express myself and harness my curiosity.
A creative mind wants to shape the world around it. And the world around us is constantly changing and evolving. I want to be ahead of the next trend. So as Martin Luther said
"to create is always to do something new".
Persistence, grit and determination are things that contribute to my creative success. The same persistence I had to get into fashion school, the same grit I had to endure after school tutors and the same determination I had to build a time machine. The creative adult is the child who survived!
The minute you realize that creativity is everywhere and you decide to take a creative approach to life it does change your perspective. View every challenge as a new puzzle to solve. Use your collected experiences as a platform for your creativity. The truth is the day I truly realized the power and art of my creativity was the same day I discovered who I was. There is a certain freedom that comes with knowing who you are. Like Oscar Wilde said, " be yourself. Everyone else is taken."
